About The Workshop
Prints existed before the printing press and the oldest examples were made from carved wood. Although this technique existed through much of the old world, woodcuts are perhaps most famous from japan culminating in the wildly popular "The Great Wave", from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei).
In this class students will have a chance to taste this history by making their own woodblock prints on Japanese style paper. We will focus on hand printing techniques, how to create multi-colored prints from one piece of wood (the reductive process), and how to line up their paper on the right spot so each layer goes into the right place.
**This class will have a morning and an afternoon session** Students who sign up for a single class can expect to create a simple design in 1-2 colors. If a student signs up for both sessions they will have the time to make a more complex and colorful piece... or two simple ones if they prefer.
This class is appropriate for ages 14+
