Shard Logic: Finding Rhythm in the Random

We are excited to host Seattle based mosaic artist Kelley Knickerbocker for a double header November 2/3rd and 4/5th. 

This workshop, Shard Logic is Saturday and Sunday 10am-5pm.

There's a rhythmic mosaic alphabet waiting to be discovered in whatever type/shape of random, leftover, offcut, broken or machined scraps and shards of material you have. In this course, you'll learn to organize and evaluate your available tesserae (by size, shape, height, color, value, et.) for expoitable relationships (likeness, contrasts, shape matches, etc.), cut new tesserae to augment the existing, and form them into graceful lines. In short, you'll figure out their unique syntax and from it, develop a coherent and interesting mosaic language. In the process of building at least one mosaic in the direct method, you'll also revisit a few essential principles of Roman mosaic grammar, figure out how to transition effectively from one material to another, discover how materials can guide the development of an abstract composition, and work with mortar as a design element.

Cost for this workshop is $395 ($345 if you also register for the Thursday/Friday workshop The Shape of Things) 

We are also offering an abbreviated version of Kelley's Mastering Mud workshop on Wednesday evening from 6-8pm for participating students who are new to using thinset and would like a more in-depth tutorial on working with thinset as an adhesive. Cost is $40.
